Supernatural - Season 4

Supernatural is one of those shows that just barely floated by my radar, until I met the woman who would become my wife, who was already a huge fan of the show. I must say I’m quite grateful she pointed me towards this show, as it has been a joy to watch over the years.

For those who are not familiar with the show, Supernatural is basically about 2 brothers who work as “monster hunters”, a business that’s been about their family for ages. This show delves into the world of these “hunters” and the various creatures they face. In the early seasons, the shows are very episodic as Dean (Jensen Ackles) and Sam (Jared Padalecki) Winchester Overcome various obstacles while pretty much battling every mythical creature in the book.

Even though each episode can seem like a random encounter with some strange creature, there is an underlying story being developed about the Winchester family that gradually comes to the foreground as the seasons progress. Unlike the feeling I get watching LOST (being jerked around by all sorts of random and weird crap, yet somehow still hooked), Supernatural feels like a much more complete and progressive story from start to its current standing at the end of season 4, you aren’t left confused, only anticipating what’s going to happen next.

Thought I must say, despite being an excellent show, most of the images you’ll see feature the Winchester brothers in some douchebagesque Abercrombie and Fitch type pose. But don’t let these eerily reminiscent of boy band posters that you’d expect to see on every teenage girls bedroom wall deter you from seeing this show. Their faces do not, in fact, stay pretty throughout each episode, I do remember one particular scene where one of the brothers was featured dangling from meat hooks. They are, afterall, taking on things that should be able to seriously kick their ass, and much to our enjoyment, they never seem to make it out unscathed.

The schoogirl inside me is swooning right now...

The chemistry between these brothers also provides a lot of drive for the show, I must say these two actors work great together, and having a brother myself, it really hits home with its portrayal of a close brother to brother relationship, the similarities , the stark differences, the fights, all very reminiscent of what its like to have a brother. The writing in this show also gets some high marks for me at least. I would have to say that there is an almost perfect balance of humor, horror, and drama here, almost every episode keeps me interested from start to finish. And there are also some moments of seriously bad-assery to consider here. The characters have a way of gradually showing themselves up, especially in the later seasons when the really crazy episodes go down.

Season 4 is where things really start to get intense in this show. Most of this season is devoted to developing the overall story over the episodic monster hunting episodes you get from the first few seasons. A lot of the mythological creatures are left in the dust and the show tends to take a more biblical direction, featuring angels and demons and the nearing of the apocalypse. This season does a pretty good job of not being black and white (in terms of good vs evil), when it comes to the relationship of the characters with the angels and the demons they encounter, the show does keep you guessing, and can probably be referred to as the most dramatic season yet.

Angels and demons in a boxing match.. RAWK!

Unfortunately, I cannot say too much about season 4 without spoilers, so we are going to have to leave it at that. If you have not yet seen this show, I recommend working your way up starting with season one. Season 5 is confirmed, and after the end of this season, it’s hard for me to see them going much further then season 5 in terms of story.

If you’re into horror/scifi , you’re going to enjoy this show, I would have to say it was probably my favorite show this season (trumping both LOST and Fringe), I HIGHLY recommend checking this out!

I haven’t seen it, but your review made me want to! I just wish I could watch it online somewhere. Do you own the first season per chance? Also, happy birthday!

    Thanks!

and no, i dont own any seasons :( however i’m probably going to end up picking them up sooner or later, i dont mind watching a few of these episodes a couple times!

Jared Padalecki is the SHIT. He is one of those Abercrombie douches that I dont mind so much. I think I may give this a try even though its a CW show, I used to watch Smallville which started blehh and built well then devolved into BARF. Heres hoping this one really does get better with age. Watch out for CW they like to flog shows like most guys flog the meat, often and much longer than is advised. Smallville should have ended after season 5 but here we are facing season 8.

Was Fringe any good? I wanted to try it but I HATE Joshua Jackson in the previews.

  9. Mark on June 23rd, 2009 7:38 am

Fringe started off “meh” for me personally, but got better near the end of the season, not as addicting as lost mind you, but still interesting. I’ve only watched bits and pieces of smallville, for some reason i’ve just never been able to stomach any superman movies/tv shows..

IMO, if they dont end supernatural on this next season, they’ll be flogging the shit out of it as well most likely..

I am a huge Fringe fan, but I liked it from the first episode, and I also don’t mind Joshua Jackson, so that might make a difference. For me it was kind of like the return of X-Files, but apparently I need to check out Supernatural before I go saying that.

  11. Mark on June 23rd, 2009 9:49 am

Actually, cut the x-files in half and you’ll get each show. Fringe covers science and technology whilst supernatural handles mythology. there is definitely something to like about each show. this makes me miss the x-files. though, i have a feeling that if Brian is correct about the CW, then Supernatural should be “Jumping the Shark” relatively soon.. time will tell..

  12. Wallis on June 23rd, 2009 12:39 pm

Get away form the SHARK ,Supernatural. Get away! There is still time. Look at the remains of Smallville and get away

It wasnt so much His Joshuaness that I objected to, but instead the fact that they seemed to have the “smart chick, one liner wise cracking guy” police team that they lampooned so brilliantly with Kristen Bell and Adam Baldwin in Forgetting Sarah Marshall. I had just watched that movie, literally, shut the power off on the DVD player and then all of a sudden heres this show with an interesting concept and then theres a dead guy dressed as an alien or something and the girl starts looking super cereal and Senor Jackson drops in with “He wont be “phoning home” anytime soon” [OK that wast the line exactly but honestly mine was better than whatever it was] and I was pretty much laughing at the show before it even started. I heard it got better latter and maybe someone realized that Jacksons only going to hurt himself with one liners.

Good News! Season 1 can be found at wal-mart for a mere 20 bucks. i picked up a copy and am working my way through the series again, forgot how good it was. Can probably loan you the first disk of season one if you wanna give it a shot jason.

  14. Jason on July 7th, 2009 12:11 pm

Indeed! I was going to point that out to you. Thank you, but I already procured myself a copy, and so far I’m enjoying it quite a bit! Thanks for the recomendation.

  15. Mark on July 7th, 2009 1:04 pm

great! please feel free to let us know in more depth what you think of the show when you’ve had some time with it! Glad somebody else is watching it, it’s too good a show to have been flying under the radar like it has.

As we draw toward the end of the first season, I can officially say I am addicted to this show. The commercials do it absolutely no justice. In fact, I haven’t even once seen them standing in the middle of the desert with their arms crossed looking at the camera like they want to sex me up. The acting is actually pretty good, and even the most generic of monsters are handled pretty creatively. Plus, there have been a couple fight scenes with movie quality choreography. And thankfully the special effects are nowhere near Smallville quality. Thanks Mark, for bringing this one to my attention.

  17. Mark on July 15th, 2009 10:44 am

glad to hear it! SPREAD THE WORD!! haha, people can pick up the first three seasons of this show off places like amazon for under 20 bucks a piece too, which i think is a pretty spectacular deal for all the entertainment you get out of this show. The first two seasons are pretty similar, and the 3rd and fourth take a pretty heavy plot turn, some loved that, some hated it. i’ll be very interested to find out what you think of it all when you catch up good sir!

  18. Mark on August 7th, 2009 3:51 pm

attention supernatural fans: season 5 starts on September 10th! sqeeeee!!

no word however, that it will be the final season, i certainly hope they decide to go out in style this season.

We’re finally getting to about halfway through the 4th season. Actually we just watched Episode 11: Family Remains, and I have to say that was definitely the most legitimately scary episode so far. It was filmed more like a horror movie, and actually made me jump a few times. I’m glad they’re getting back into chasing monsters, the third season wasn’t really my favorite.

  20. Mark on October 20th, 2009 11:56 am

i’m going to have to agree with you on season 3, most of the story progression in 3 seems to have built up to the events in season 4, which goes crazy with the story progression, but still has some nice “monster hunts” as well.

i’d be interested to see what your thoughts are on the story at the end of season 4

5 so far.. is interesting, the show is getting really biblical though, which i understand might turn some people off, i’m still enjoying it though.

a recent episode had Paris Hilton as a guest star, she was promptly decapitated.. awesome.

  21. Dave on October 20th, 2009 12:04 pm

I’m just barely 3 episodes into the first season. I think I’m going to like this show.

  22. Mark on November 6th, 2009 10:31 am

last nights episode was hilarious. The trickster returns and reaps havoc once again, and the show fantastically knocks Greys Anatomy at a point.

for what i was expecting might be the darkest season yet, its actually surprisingly lighthearted, little bits of story elements end up being sewn into most episodes, while they still have their major plot episodes, they seem to be returning to a decent mix of story/drama/humor again. I’m really enjoying season 5 (and based on the pace, i know they wont be ending it here, we’ll likely be seeing several more seasons at this rate)

whats reassuring is that whenever they seem to tire one thing out, they switch gears, the writing on this show and the timing of the episodes is incredibly smart, even at the 5th season the show still feels very fresh.

I can contrast this to lost where its the same damn tiring confusing shit for every episode, yes i’m still hooked, but i’m very happy they are ending that show at season 6. In the case of Superatural, I was ready for season 5 to be the final season, so they could end on a high note. however, now that they’ve changed the pace, i’ll happily sign myself up for a few more seasons.

  23. Mark on November 28th, 2009 12:54 pm

    right now on amazon
supernatural seasons 1-3 are 12.99 each
    season 4 is 14.99

i’m not sure if the deal is just today or not, but there isn’t a better time to pick it up. i just nabbed 3 and 4 for under 30 bucks!

  24. Dave on November 30th, 2009 12:21 pm

Thanks for the heads up. I missed it unfortunately. I’ll keep my eye out to see if it drops again.
